Biography

Born Wesley Earl Craven was an American director best known for his slasher films, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream which featured a mix of horror cliches, humour and satire. The influential director made his first featured film as a director in 1972’s The Last House on the Left, though with low expectations for the movie, it was screened more than he had assumed. His Movie The Hills Have Eyes, cemented his role as a horror film director, which led him to believe “It’s clear that I wasn’t going to do anything else unless it was scary”

Wes Craven earned an undergraduate degree in English and psychology from Wheaton College in Illinois and a master’s degree in philosophy and writing from Johns Hopkins University. He briefly taught English at Westminster College and also a humanities professor at Clarkson College of Technology  New York.  During his time at Madrid-Waddington High School in Madrid, New York, he purchased a used 16 mm film camera and began making short movies. His first creative job in the film industry was as a sound editor at New York City film production co.

Wes Craven was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on the 2nd of August 1939, son of Caroline (née Miller) and Paul Eugene Craven. His marriage to Bonnie Broecker ended in 1970, though their union produced two children Jonathan and Jessica Craven. Later in 1982, he remarried, this time to actress Mimi Craven, however, they separated five years after their marriage in 1987. In 2004, Craven married Iya Labunka.
